Baseball Transactions Heating Up
Baseball Transactions Heating Up
Yes, it is only April 23rd but you would think, from all the recent transactions, that it was almost the trading deadline in July.
Since the weekend began on Friday, April 20th, there have been forty-one player transactions in Major League Baseball. These included quite a few call-ups from the minors, a couple trades and several signings of free agents who had not caught on with a team as of yet.
Forty-one transactions and the season is not year two weeks old! Is this a large number? Surprisingly no it is not! Usually at the beginning of the season in the first two weeks or so teams will tinker with their line-ups; also, one of the most common times to suffer an injury is right after Spring Training, so quite a few players are put on the DL and new players are called up from the minor leagues.
The other time of major activity is July as the trading deadline approaches and contending teams adjust rosters and try to find one or two players that will help them as they approach the playoffs, while teams that are out of the playoff run try to dump salaries and build for the future.
From a player’s standpoint this can be rather unsettling. Not only is the player trying to concentrate o playing his sport to the best of his ability but he also has the distraction of not knowing where he might be playing the next day.
Players in the minor leagues are of course trying to put up the best possible numbers so they will be called up if an injury occurs. It is all part of the business side of baseball and it seemingly never ends. Phone calls are made, players are notified of a trade or other change in their status and the merry-go-round that is Major League Baseball continues.
