As expected, the Indianapolis Colts chose Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the first pick in this year’s NFL Draft following immediately by another expected pick, Robert Griffin III to the Washington Redskins.
After the initial two picks the players expected to go in the first round did go in the first round but there was one notable surprise. With the fifteenth pick in the draft the Seattle Seahawks picked Bruce Irvin, a linebacker/defensive end out of West Virginia and a player who was not projected to go in the first two rounds because of his arrest two months ago on a vandalism charge. Evidently Coach Pete Carroll thought highly enough of Irvin to take a chance. Scouts had earlier touted Irvin as having the speed and range of a Clay Matthews so time will tell whether the Seahawks’ gamble pays off.
Cleveland found the running back they so desperately needed in Trent Richardson and the Vikings greatly improved their offensive line with OT Matt Kalil. The Patriots continue to improve by picking up DE Chandler Jones and ILB Don’t’a Hightower, bolstering a defense that had been aging.
One other surprise in the first round found Cleveland taking QB Brandon Weeden with the 22nd pick; one has to wonder what Colt McCoy is thinking this morning as he enjoys his breakfast. The elation he must have felt for the pick of Richardson was replaced an hour later when suddenly he found out he had serious competition for the starting QB position.
And so it goes in the world of professional sports. When Saturday ended more than 250 players had been drafted and still others will be signed who were not drafted; that list is led by RB Chris Polk of the University of Washington, easily the best running back not chosen in this year’s draft.
