NFL Rule Changes for 2017 Season
NFL rule changes for the 2017 season are as follows:
- The leaper block attempt on field goals and extra point plays is prohibited.
- A player is disqualified who is penalized twice in one game for certain unsportsmanlike penalties
- After a touchback, the spot of the next snap is changed to the 25-yard line.
- A receiver running a pass route is now given defenseless player protection.
- Crackback blocks by a backfield player is now prohibited, no matter where he is.
- Sideline replay monitor is replaced with a hand-held device.
- Designated members of the Officiating department can make final decisions on replays.
- Multiple fouls on the same down, designed to manipulate the clock, is considered unsportsmanlike conduct.
- It is illegal to conserve time after the two-minute warning of either half.
- Liberalization of timing, testing, and administering physical exams to draft-eligible players.
- Permit employees of a club to interview and be hired by another club during the playing season, provided the current employer has consented.
None of these NFL rule changes can be considered game-changers with the possible exception of the leaper block attempt. The Seattle Seahawks, famous for this maneuver, will find this particularly upsetting. All other rule changes listed above will happen without most football fans even noticing that they are happening during a game.
