MLB Player Relocations for May 20, 2017
MLB player relocations look something like this: It was a seemingly unimportant mention under the baseball transactions listed Saturday, May 20. The world of sports was informed that the Arizona had traded RHP Enrique Burgos to Atlanta for cash considerations. It also stated that Atlanta had acquired 1B Matt Adams from St. Louis for INF Juan Yepez and cash, and had transferred RHP Chaz Roe to the 60-day DL. RHP Luke Jackson was also recalled from Gwinnett in minor league baseball.
One team, the Atlanta Braves, on an otherwise normal Saturday during the 2017 baseball season, had directly affected the professional lives of five baseball players who were suddenly facing the tedious process known as athlete relocation.
What wasn’t mentioned in that short media announcement was what happened next. Enrique Burgos, Matt Adams, Juan Yepez, Chaz Roe, and Luke Jackson all started packing their bags. All made calls to airports to acquire passage to new cities. All had to arrange for transportation of their needed belongings, and all had to arrange for short-term housing in their new home team city. The next 48 hours were a whirlwind of activity and anxiety for those five players because, let’s face it, relocation causes anxiety for any professional athlete. Chances are excellent, although this, too, wasn’t mentioned in the announcement, that all five players knew nothing of the relocation until the moment it happened, so add to the anxiety and sense of surprise and possibly shock.
