Injuries in Pro Sports and Athlete Relocation
The recent injury to Chicago Cubs player Kyle Schwarber dramatically draws attention to the very nature of athlete relocation.
By now most of you know that Schwarber and teammate Dexter Fowler were chasing a fly ball in left-center field in a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. A collision occurred and Schwarber ended up tearing his ACL and LCL and is out for the season.
His replacement on the roster reported to the team the next morning while Schwarber prepared for a summer without baseball.
Major League Baseball, just like the NBA and the NFL, is a sport of transition. Players come and players go and a very few stay on and play every game in a season. Rosters are constantly being shuffled. Players are constantly being moved from team to team. It is safe to say that professional sports is not a job for someone who does not embrace change.
Are you ready for change? If you got the call tomorrow telling you to relocate to another team, another city, how quickly could you do that? Do you have a plan in place to handle all the small details that a relocation entails? Do you have a support system in place to help you with such a relocation?
