How to Avoid Problems with Moving Companies
We were recently asked that question, how to avoid problems with moving companies….what steps should a homeowner take to make sure the moving company they hire is reputable and reliable?
It’s an important question. If you have ever had problems during relocation, or you know someone who has, then you know what a nightmare it can be. Damaged furniture, hidden costs, unreasonable fees, late pick-up, late delivery, the list of potential problems is seemingly endless, and each one of them sends shivers down the spine of a potential customer.
Never fear! There are a few things you can do before hiring that moving company that will insure that the moving process will go on without a hitch.
First, do research. Most of the potential problems can be avoided simply by doing your homework. Ask friends and neighbors who they have used in the past. Ask the Better Business Bureau. Check out the website for American Moving and Storage Association. The more information you can gather, the better you’ll feel about your decision of choice.
Secondly, call each company and ask questions about prices, insurance coverage, handling procedures, staff qualification and general policies.
Third, once you have whittled your list down to two or three, call each company and ask them for references. You are well-within your rights to do so. Ask for five references and then follow up on the references.
Finally, do not sign a thing until you have read every single line of the moving contract. Do not get trapped by hidden fees buried in the contract. This is a big expenditure and your belongings are important to you, so important that you should take the time to read the entire contract. Once you’ve signed it you can’t claim ignorance.
If you follow those suggestions, chances are excellent that your moving experience will be a pleasurable and trouble-free one.
