Coaching Relocations in Professional Sports

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced that Dave Roberts would be their manager for the 2016 season, making him their first minority manager, and another coaching relocation begins  This announcement comes several weeks after the Seattle Mariners announced their new manager and it comes at the exact time when several NFL coaches are wondering if they will have a team to coach at season’s end.

We spend a great deal of time on this site discussing the athlete relocation realities of playing in a professional sport, but today we will mention the same realities for those who coach and manage in the NFL, NBA, MLB and other professional sports leagues.

No one in professional sports is immune to relocation, from players to general managers to coaches and their staffs.  As the old song, “That’s Life,” says, “riding high in April, shot down in May.”  Teams change.  Players change.  Coaches change, and that change can happen at the drop of a hat or the closed door of a managerial meeting.

And change means action, and relocation means needing immediate transportation, short-term housing, selling of real estate, transporting of goods and autos and basically the start of a new chapter in your life.  When relocation happens, turn to the pros.  Your life will be much-less stressful if you do.
