Spring Training 2012 About To Begin

Spring Training 2012 About To Begin

It is hard to believe but Major League Baseball is about to begin once again.  The first team to arrive at Spring Training this year will be the Seattle Mariners; the M’s arrive on February 11th in preparation for their two games against Oakland in Tokyo on March 28-29.  All other teams will arrive at their Spring Training camps on February 19th.

Fifteen teams will arrive in Florida for the Grapefruit League and fifteen teams will call Arizona and the Cactus League their home for six weeks.  Thirty teams total, each team with their forty-man roster plus non-roster invitees, meaning in the next couple weeks over 1,500 players will be relocating to either Florida or Arizona for the six-week preparation to the regular season.

Do you think the life of a professional athlete is easy?  Consider this: in the past three days there have been twenty-two transactions involving major league players, and within the next couple weeks you can count on many more to take place.  Non-roster invitees have no idea where they will end up at the end of spring training, and if more trades take place many players who are on the 40-man roster will be changing teams.  In other words, the next six weeks will be a time of great transition for hundreds of players.

Now consider those players who are certain where they will be playing when the regular season begins.  They will be leaving their homes in ten days, spend six weeks in either Florida or Arizona, then move again to their team’s city to begin the regular season.  During the season they will play 81 games at their home field, which may or may not be where they actually live, and 81 games in cities across the United States.  Teams on the West Coast will travel over 20,000 miles during the season, a season which will not end until late October.  Welcome to the life of a Major League baseball player.

Obviously housing is an issue, especially for fringe players who are not sure where they will be playing after spring training ends.  The upcoming weeks will be filled with changing hotels, finding short term housing of one type or another, and trying to move possessions around from city to city, not knowing where they will finally end up living.  And what about their families?  The wives and children of a Major League baseball player know only that dad will be gone for quite some time; does the family follow dad around? Do they set up temporary housing in the team’s city? Do they keep their permanent home, wherever that might be? With an uncertain real estate market these are weighty decisions and it is happening to over a thousand players right now.
