SportsRelocation.com - Victor Ortiz Is Not In Kansas Anymore @VICIOUSortiz
By road it is 1800 miles from Garden City, Kansas to Ledyard, Connecticut. For Victor Ortiz the distance isn’t measured in miles but rather in life experience.
Ortiz won the WBC Welterweight title Saturday night with a unanimous decision over Andre Berto. The judges scored it 114-112, 114-111, and 115-110 for Ortiz in a fight he clearly dictated and controlled most of the way.
The 24-year old Ortiz has come a long way since his youth in Garden City, Kansas. Abandoned by both parents, a product of the Kansas foster system, and one-time drug dealer, Victor Ortiz has lived a lifetime since those days that shaped him and fueled his passion, leading to the bout at the MGM Grand in Ledyard, Connecticut.
It’s hard not to cheer for Ortiz, a rare combination of superior quickness and tenacious punching power. He had Berto in trouble immediately with two knockdowns in the 1st Round and another in the 6th, and although he was himself knocked down in the 2nd , taking a mandatory eight-count, there was no doubt who was in control of this bout. By the end Berto was barely hanging on, his legs gone and his will broken.
Victor Ortiz may have entered this fight as an underdog, but considering what he had to go through to get to this point, it is doubtful that Ortiz considered himself an underdog. He was a Kansas Golden Gloves champion in 1997 at ten years of age, a Junior Olympics champion at sixteen (while at the time dealing drugs), and voted ESPN’s Prospect of the Year in 2008, but questions have always followed Ortiz and he fought in relative anonymity. Was he too soft? Could he move to a higher weight division and maintain his quickness? Did he have the heart to be a champion?
It would now appear after his performance in Connecticut that all questions have been answered. The world has a new welterweight champion and we at SportsRelocation.com want to congratulate the champion on a great fight. He had to travel 1800 miles to win his belt but the distance was immeasurable when considering life’s lessons.
