Floyd Mayweather, Jr: The Man, The Myth, The Legend
Few names in sports, or for that matter life in general, garner instant recognition but the name Floyd Mayweather does. Undefeated as a boxer with a perfect 42-0 record, considered by many to be the best boxer pound-for-pound on the planet, Mayweather is an American icon who is both revered and misunderstood by sporting fans worldwide.
Hailing from Grand Rapids, Michigan, the 34-year old Mayweather is a five-division world champion and holder of ten world titles including the lineal championship in three different weight classes. Twice he has been voted “Fighter of the Year,” in 1998 and again in 2007, and he is one of the few boxers to retire and then successfully return to the ring seemingly unaffected by this layoff.
The only possible mountain left to climb for Mayweather is a much-anticipated bout with Manny Pacquiao, a fight that would leave both boxers with unimaginable wealth and the winner with the claim as the best fighter in the world. When that bout takes place is a matter of much conjecture but the boxing world is eager to see it take place soon.
Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is no stranger to wealth. During his career he has earned hundreds of millions; unlike many boxers, however, Mayweather has realized that there is life after boxing and he has taken steps to secure his future with some savvy business decisions.
By 2007 the change had begun. An appearance on “Dancing With The Stars” as well as HBO’s “24/7” helped to solidify his stature in the entertainment world outside of boxing. He has started his own film company, Mayweather Productions, in partnership with Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, and has his own promotion company, Mayweather Promotions, to help promote his own matches. Recently he entered the soft drink industry with his own soda, “Lottery Soda,” and more business ventures are in the planning stage.
In addition, Mayweather is quite busy with his Floyd Mayweather Foundation which helps underprivileged kids and their families, and more philanthropic ventures are being planned. This is, in a word, a “forward-thinking” athlete who is determined to avoid the pitfalls that have befallen many boxers who preceded him.
One has the feeling that Floyd Mayweather, Jr. will land on his feet no matter what the future has in store for him. It is refreshing and encouraging to see an athlete take control of his own future and we at SportsRelocation.com applaud him and wish him continued success in his endeavors.
