Twelve Player Deal Involving Knicks, Denver, and Minnesota
As has been expected for weeks, All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony has been traded. What wasn’t expected was the magnitude of the trade.
In the deal, Denver will send Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Sheldon William, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman to the Nicks. In exchange they will receive Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, three drafts picks and $3 million from the Knicks. In addition, Minnesota will acquire Eddy Curry and Anthony Randolph from the Knicks for Corey Brewer.
Anthony is expected to sign a three-year contract extension with the Knicks for $65 million and be in their lineup Wednesday. He will be joining Amare Stoudemire in what could be an explosive frontcourt for the Knicks, but the cost was indeed steep. The core of the Knicks team, four of their top six players, was traded and it remains to be seen what kind of effect this will have on the team.
Denver coach George Karl admitted to “some sadness” concerning the deal but felt it was time for his team to move forward.
Although trades are a common occurrence in professional sports, one of this magnitude are not commonplace. Twelve current NBA players and three future draft picks will be relocating to different cities, and relocation means an overwhelming number of decisions as lives are uprooted.
