SportsRelocation.com - Atlanta Thrashers Move To Winnipeg
What was once lost has been found again for Winnipeg as it rejoins the National Hockey League after a fifteen year hiatus. In 1996 Winnipeg saw their beloved Jets move to Phoenix so needless to say Manitoba’s largest city is having a major celebration over the news that the Atlanta Thrashers are being moved to Winnipeg.
This is the second time Atlanta has lost an NHL team; 31 years ago the Flames left this city of five million people and chances are very poor that Atlanta will see another team in the near future. But for Winnipeg this is a time to rejoice. The team name Thrashers can’t be used in Winnipeg but they can revert back to using the name Jets since there are no legal obstacles to prevent that from happening.
Hockey never really found a place in Atlanta. The Thrashers only made one playoff appearance and attendance ranked 28th out of 30 teams. Financial difficulties have plagued the franchise for years and in a market already sustaining three other pro sports franchises, hockey never really caught on. Finally, True North Sports and Entertainment, a group out of Winnipeg that includes billionaire David Thomson, agreed to a $170 million purchase price and the deal was done. The new Winnipeg team will play next season in the MTS Centre, a 15,015 arena.
Now the 26-man roster and coaches will begin the relocation process to Winnipeg, pending of course that the league owners approve the move on June 21st, but that appears to be just a formality. Relocation of course means the selling of homes, buying of homes, moving of possessions, transporting vehicles, and making financial arrangements. Some teams receive partial relocation costs and in this deal the league owners will cough up nearly $60 million to help cover those costs, but still the relocation of so many players and coaches is a troubling process.
