SportsRelocation.com - 2011 Major League Baseball Draft Happens Next Week

Next week, Monday through Wednesday, Major League Baseball will hold its annual First-Year Player draft and by all accounts this is a loaded field of potential stars.  Although no clear superstar has emerged as a consensus number one pick, the depth of this field is what makes it noteworthy.

The draft order for the first ten picks is as follows:

1)      Pittsburgh Pirates

2)      Seattle Mariners

3)      Arizona Diamondbacks

4)      Baltimore Orioles

5)      Kansas City Royals

6)      Washington Nationals

7)      Arizona Diamondbacks

8)      Cleveland Indians

9)      Chicago Cubs

10)   San Diego Padres

Most likely the first three picks will be:  Gerrit Cole, a right-handed pitcher out of UCLA, whose stock has risen dramatically this season; Anthony Rendon, a third-baseman out of Rice, whose injured shoulder is the only thing keeping him from being a consensus number one pick; and Danny Hultzen, a left-handed pitcher out of Virginia and who is considered close to big league ready right now.

After those three it is a coin toss at best deciding who will be picked next, but the talent is there and it is deep.  Several high school players are well-liked by most teams and would not be a surprise if they went early.  Dylan Bundy, a right-handed pitcher out of Oswasso High School in Oklahoma, Bubba Starling, an outfielder from Gardner-Edgerton High School in Kansas, and Archie Bradley, a right-handed pitcher out of Broken Arrow High School in Oklahoma are considered the top high school prospects.

The Draft is always interesting in that many teams draft according to specific needs while others choose the “best talent available.” Pitchers, and especially left-handed pitchers, are always highly regarded, but then the flip side of that statement is that pitchers are always a higher risk because of potential arm injuries.  The Mariners, for example, are in need of a power-hitting third baseman immediately, so one would think that Rendon is almost a guarantee if he is available after Pittsburg chooses, but in the baseball draft there are few guarantees.

What is a guarantee is that the first ten draft picks are about to become rich young men regardless of which team chooses them.  Scott Boras, the King of Agents, has cornered this year’s market of top prospects, and Mr. Boras is known for the huge contracts negotiated for his clients, so instant multi-millionaires will emerge on the sports scene come Monday, June 6th.

We at SportsRelocation.com will be watching with great interest and we look forward to working with some of these young men to help them in their relocation, just as we have for other professional athletes.  Good luck to all of you!
