NHL AGREEMENT REACHED

It took 113 days of arguing, debating and bargaining, but the National Hockey League finally reached a verbal agreement for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.
625 regular season games were lost but now it is full-speed ahead for the remainder of the season. It looks like the season will begin either on January 15th or 19th, with fifty games to be scheduled and played. Most likely only conference games will be scheduled, meaning quite a few rival games will be lost this season.
No matter; hockey is back!
The lockout began on September 15, 2012, with both sides, the NHL and the NHLPA, far apart in their bargaining stance. The main point of contention was the players’ share of revenue. Under the old agreement, that share was 57%, but the NHL had offered 43% in July, and that led to the shut-down of the season. Also in contention was the salary cap, with the League asking for a $60 million cap.
Final figures are not yet available, but it is believed that the cap will be at $64.3 million this season.
Now that the bitterness and long negotiations are completed, players are scrambling to get into playing shape and make their way to team headquarters, with a little over one week to go before the season begins.
To borrow from the old poem, there is now joy in Mudville as hockey fans rejoice the return of their favorite sport. Drop the puck on center ice and let’s get this season underway.
