NFL Rule Change On Roster Cuts
The NFL rule change regarding roster cuts, passed by league owners back in January 2017, will be in effect this year during Training Camps, which just began around the NFL. This new rule states that when teams trim their rosters from 90 players to 53, all roster cuts will occur on the same day.
In the past, roster cuts were conducted in two phases, one dropping the roster from 90 to 75, and the second cutting the rosters from 75 to the final 53.
The preseason ends on September 1, 2017. Teams will be required to complete roster cuts by 4 p.m. ET on September 3rd. Teams can, however, cut before September 3rd; whether they do so remains to be seen.
One other NFL rule change to take note of as the preseason begins: NFL overtime has been cut from fifteen minutes to ten this year. Will that make any discernible difference? Who knows? It’s hard to imagine this rule change having any impact whatsoever on games this season but again, who knows?
And so it begins! If your team has not begun training camp yet, it will do so in the next day or so.
The preseason games begin on August 3rd with the Hall of Fame Game from Canton, Ohio, featuring Dallas and Arizona. The first full round of preseason games will be held from August 9-13.
Hold onto your seats, folks . . . the 2017 NFL Season is about to begin!
