NBA Trade Deadline Winners and Losers
The NBA Trade Deadline has come and gone, and teams are now left to make it all work, and fans are left to debate the trades and their value. Make no mistake about it, trades are always a crapshoot during the best of times. Will a newly acquired player mesh with the core you currently have? Will the loss of a player ruin the atmosphere of a team, or ruin the cohesiveness of that team? And what about down the road? Is a trade now good for a team three years from now? These are things team executives kick around into the wee hours of the night during the trade period, and now they will stay up late at night worrying about their trades and whether or not they should have made them.
So when we take a look at these trades, it is with the understanding that it is all conjecture this soon after the trade. Only time will tell if a trade helped or hurt a team.
Any discussion of the 2017 NBA trade deadline must begin with the trade between the Sacramento Kings and the New Orleans Pelicans which sent DeMarcus Cousins to New Orleans for practically nothing in return. Fans and experts are screaming “what are they doing?” but again, we must wait and see how this trade truly plays out. Right now we put that trade in the win column for New Orleans.
What about the Toronto Raptors? It would appear that, in acquiring Ibaka and Tucker, the Raptors are the only team in the East to improve. Boston Celtics fans might disagree with that, but realistically Boston is still a year away from making magic. Keep on eye on Toronto as the playoffs approach.
Big winner? Oklahoma City Thunder! They somehow managed to nab Gibson, McDermott, and a second-round draft pick and only gave up a backup point guard. We are still trying to figure out how they pulled that off.
Chicago Bulls? Forget about their trades. They are a horrible three-point shooting teams, so what do they do? Give up their best shooter for a worse shooter. They also gave up a pick and a beloved power forward in Gibson. If you can figure out the goal Chicago was chasing then you are better at this than we are.
We also like the Dallas moves. We also do not like the Knicks and Nugget’s moves.
And so it goes with the NBA trade deadline moves.
