MLB Waiver Deadline Activity
For awhile, it looked like August 31st would be a typical waiver trade deadline. Rarely are there big deals at this deadline, but usually there is some minor activity as contending teams jockey about trying to find the best position during the stretch run.
This year was no different. There was a flurry of last-minute transactions that may or may not help some pennant-running teams. Only time will tell.
The Cubs were the first to pull the trigger when they picked up centerfielder Austin Jackson from the Mariners for a player to be named later. Shortly after that trade the Royals were active again, acquiring Jonny Gomes from the Atlanta Braves for minor-league shortstop Luis Valenzuela.
The San Francisco Giants then stepped up to the plate and worked a deal for Alejandro De Aza from the Boston Red Sox for pitcher Luis Ysla. And finally the Los Angeles Dodgers grabbed Justin Ruggiano from the Mariners for again, a player to be named later.
Again, none of these are major moves, but we’ll have to wait for another month to find out their true value.
