MLB Spring Training Means Hundreds of Transactions and Relocation
As the MLB Spring Training schedule continues, and as teams seek the perfect combination of players for the upcoming season, it is safe to say that this may be the busiest time for any of the professional sports seasons with regards to transactions.
Why do we make that claim?
On Monday, March 21, there were twenty-seven transactions made in Major League Baseball. The day before, Sunday, March 20, there were fifty-seven, and those days were the norm rather than anomalies. Teams have ten more days to assign, option and finalize the 25-man rosters they will take into the upcoming season. They also must make decisions on the forty-man rosters, and all the while checking the wave wire to see if there is anyone let go by other clubs who could be a “perfect fit” for their needs.
It is a dizzying time for all team executives and players, and the bottom line is that this is a hectic time of insecurity for many, many ballplayers. Where will they start the season? Which city will they call home for the next six months? Should their wives join them in the new city? What about children? How do they arrange transportation? All of these decisions must be made at a moment’s notice for many players, and until April 1st arrives there will be no definitive answers. One thing is for sure: there will be a great deal of relocation happening in the next week.
Twenty-seven transactions on Monday. Fifty-seven on Sunday, and each of those transactions was a human being with life decisions to be made depending on the nature of the transaction.
Dizzying times indeed!
