Leasing May Be the Smart First Decision when Relocating
To buy or to lease….that is the question professional athletes face when staring down the barrel of relocation, and it is a question that needs to be considered carefully.
Many athletes are now leasing first, and waiting to buy a home until they have financial security.
President and CEO of Sportsrelocation.com, Ikem Chukumerije, works closely with athletes throughout the entire relocation process. In an article recently posted in the L.A. Times, Chukumerije said: “Leasing is less of a hassle compared to purchasing, especially when you factor in free agency and non-guaranteed contracts. I don’t want to put someone in a situation where they call me a year from now because they are underwater.”
Chukumerije handles all aspects of the athlete relocation process, including real estate, transportation of possessions and vehicles, and other financial advice. He also stated in the Times article that “athletes often wait to buy a home until the second, third, or fourth contract, and I think that is a very smart decision.”
