How To Find the Best School After Relocation
How To Find the Best School After Relocation
The average American moves about once every five years, a fairly astounding rate all things considered. Interestingly enough most of these relocations involve a move within 25 miles of their former home. Not the case with professional athletes; when a trade or new signing occurs the relocation for an athlete will involve hundreds if not thousands of miles and the problems associated with such a move are greatly multiplied.
Relocation is a huge undertaking if it only involves one person or a married couple, but if the move involves a family with school-aged children then a whole new set of considerations enters the picture.
How do you decide which school is the best in a new city? During these economic times when school funding is being cutback in most districts, what should you be looking for when searching for the ideal school for your children? How do you go about finding the perfect match for your kids? These are extremely important questions so we have put together a few things to think about when you are faced with your next relocation of family.
Several websites are available, like GreatSchools.net, that have some rather important information about schools across America. These websites can tell you the following:
- District start and end dates
- Student/teacher ratio
- Instructional dollars spent per pupil
- Before-and-after school programs
- Gifted and talented programs
- Number of computer in the school
- District standardized test scores
All very useful facts to know when searching for a new school, but the reality of it is that nothing is better than a school visit if you want to get a real “feel” for what a school is like. Schedule a visit and observe the environment and the students. Do they appear happy and engaged in their learning environment? Do the teachers appear enthusiastic and supportive? Talk to other parents; the school parking lot is a treasure chest of information for a prospective parent.
When you visit a school be ready to fire away with some important questions which should include:
- What is the school philosophy?
- What are the discipline policies and safety procedures?
- What kind of library resources are there?
- At what level of technology is the school?
- Is there an Arts program? Extra-curricular activities?
- And of course what are the testing results over the past five years?
In today’s world of instant information it is very easy to find out most things about any school in America, but nothing beats a visit to each school and a sit-down with the administration. A good school will stand out by simple observation of teachers, support staff and students. Similarly a bad school will also become apparent through observation and discussion.
Go to the trouble to find out as much as you can about each possible school once your relocation process is underway. For your kids this is the most important thing you can do for their future.
