Baseball Transactions Hot and Heavy
We are a month-and-a-half into the regular season and teams are just starting to hit their stride and settle in for the long six-month race to the World Series. Baseball purists will tell you that a player’s potential cannot be measured until they have at least 100 at-bats and we are now at that point. Having seen the players now for this amount of time teams are starting to adjust their rosters looking for the perfect combination.
Most baseball fans might be surprised by the amount of activity currently going on. In the weekend just passed sixty-one roster moves were made in Major League baseball. Either players were sent down to the minors, called up from the minors, placed on the DL or signed a free agent contract. Sixty-one players moved around during one weekend in May.
That is one heck of a lot of transactions considering we haven’t even made it to summer yet. Sixty-one players now facing relocation once again and it isn’t even June yet. All of them just settled in from relocating from the Spring Training facilities and now must relocate again. This is one side of professional sports that most fans are unaware of and it is most definitely a troublesome side for athletes.
Many professional athletes are opting for signing short term leases on condos so that they don’t buy in a market they very well may not be living in a month down the road and really, who can blame them? This is a nomad’s existence for many fringe players and until they can find some stability the only logical step for them to take is to sign a short-term lease for their living arrangements.
That still leaves the hassle of transporting possessions and arranging travel and securing transportation each and every time they need to relocate. There are players in Major League baseball who will relocate three or four times during a season. That, my friends, is some serious instability.
