2017 NFL Draft Winners and Losers
We hesitate to even write this article because, quite frankly, picking the 2017 NFL Draft winners and losers is like tossing a dart at a dartboard blindfolded. What appears to be a great draft one day can blow up and disappear with one injury during training camp, and what looks like a miserable draft can turn into the stuff of legends (just ask the Seahawks Legion of Boom about drafts). However, what fun is the NFL Draft without some speculation? For fans and observers, that is all we are left with now that the dust has cleared and over two-hundred athletes have been drafted.
So we will go forward and give you our first impressions of the draft.
Cincinnati took full advantage of the eleven draft picks they had, and the first four of their picks were among the top thirty-five of PFF’s final draft board. It is hard to feel bad about Cincinnati as May begins and training camp looms on the horizon.
Cleveland, meanwhile, had ten picks this year including three first-rounders, and they also have twelve picks next year, including five first-and-second rounders and oh, did we mention they drafted Myles Garrett, David Njoku, Larry Ogunjobi, Howard Wilson, Caleb Brantley, and Zane Gonzalez? It would take some monumental blundering on the part of Cleveland to turn this year’s draft into a loss.
The Seattle Seahawks, a team which seems to have an aversion to first-round drafts picks, did their normal thing and traded away the 24th overall pick and managed to get five draft picks in return. There was some masterful wheeling and dealing happening in the Seahawks war room as they turned six draft picks into eleven and picked up some much-needed athleticism on both sides of the ball.
And of course there were some losers in the 2017 NFL Draft, and the Chicago Bears lead that pack. The Bears gave up multiple picks to move up so they could pick quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, a move that will look fantastic if Trubisky ends up being the second coming of Drew Brees . . . but that is a mighty big if.
Jacksonville and Atlanta round out our “losers” category in the 2017 NFL Draft. They are mentioned in tandem because of some rather questionable draft selections, selections that did not answer their needs approaching the NFL season. Now they may prove us wrong by December, but right now those picks, especially in the first two rounds, were questionable at best.
