Relocation mistakes to avoid, a phrase, by itself, that raises the blood pressure and makes the average human being break out in a cold sweat.
Because relocation is a stressful time for most people, and it is a safe bet that most people have horror stories they can share regarding a relocation effort that did not, shall we say, go according to plan, and the psychological stress of relocation that followed. Not only is the mere act of relocation stressful, but the opportunity for “disaster” just makes that relocation all the more nerve-wracking.
But never fear! Sports Relocation, Inc. is here! We have compiled a short list of relocation mistakes you might consider the next time relocation becomes a reality for you. Let’s get started.
RUSHED SALES AND RENTALS
Real estate transactions are some of the biggest financial transactions you will ever make. Do not make them in a rush. Do not take the first offer on your old house that comes down the pike. Do not rush into renting your old home. Do not feel pressured to rent just any old thing in the new city, and do not rush into buying a new home in the new city. Avoid hasty decisions during athlete relocation.
Take your time!
DO NOT PROCRASTINATE
Time is not an unlimited commodity and yet, when it comes to preparing for a relocation, most people treat time like it is unlimited. Set a timetable of important tasks and stick with that timetable. If at all possible, start planning for your relocation a good three-or-four months in advance. Obviously, if you are a professional athlete, and you have been traded, this is not possible, but you can still make some preparations in advance for that trade you never see coming.
PLAN, PLAN, AND THEN PLAN SOME MORE
You should never “wing it” when relocating. Too many things can go wrong when flying by the seat of your pants, so plan that relocation, down to the finest detail. Who will transport your vehicles? Who will contact your financial institutions? Your medical providers? Are your kids properly considered? Their school records? Are boxes properly marked? Which moving company is the best? How far in advance must you hire a moving company? How about short-term housing in the new city?
The time to consider these questions is now, before a relocation becomes a reality, so get busy!
KNOW THE LAW
What you commonly do in, say, California, might not be legal in, oh, New York, so always check local laws for the do’s and don’t’s before moving. In many cases, moving companies are prevented, by law, from transporting certain items across state lines, so know in advance what is, and what isn’t, allowed.
It’s all a lot to keep track of, right? There seems to be relocation mistakes throughout any relocation, and each potential mistake is scary.
So why not turn to the relocation experts for relocation assistance and let them handle it for you?
