Inglewood Stadium Delayed One Year

Inglewood Stadium, future home of the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, will be delayed in opening for one year due to two months of torrential rains which severely delayed work on the 298-acre sports and entertainment center.

15.4 inches of rain fell on the worksite from November to February, at times leaving a lake where excavation had begun.  The decision was finally made to postpone opening until 2020.  NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told the NFL league’s 32-team owners of the delay recently.

The Rams will remain in the Coliseum through the 2019 season and the Chargers will play home games at AEG’s StubHub Center in nearby Carson.

What does this mean to the Los Angeles area and the two teams involved?  It’s almost impossible to gauge the impact regarding revenue.  Local neighboring businesses, obviously, will not see the expected revenue for another year, but it is doubtful either team will suffer too much of a revenue loss.  What this delay does do is allow the construction to continue with room for flexibility in case there are any other setbacks.  Inglewood was supposed to be the site of the 2021 Super Bowl, but chances are good that a waiver will be voted through and the Super Bowl will instead be held at Inglewood in 2022.

In addition to the Inglewood stadium, the complex will also have a 300-room hotel, several hundred thousand square feet of retail space and offices, and a 6,000 seat performance venue, all of which will also be delayed by that year.

Judging by the lack of uproar over this announcement, it is a safe bet that fans will still arrive for the 2020 season eager to purchase tickets.  In fact, the delay may well help team officials in selling season ticket packages.
