NFL Transactions: One Team, One Day, Thirty-One Lives Affected

05 September, 2017

NFL transactions continue as the final cuts for the 2017 season just occurred, bringing each team down to the mandated 53-man roster. One sentence quickly summarizing a flurry of activity.  To drive home this point, let’s take a look at the New York Giants and the transactions they put into motion on Sunday, September 3, 2017. The Giants acquired CB Ross Cockrell from Pittsburgh for a conditional 2018 draft pick.  They also place LB Mark Herzlich and DL Josh Banks on injured reserve.  [...]

29 August, 2017

Relocation checklist realities must be taken into consideration at all times if you have a job which might require sudden transfers or relocation.  Worst case scenario, you are a professional athlete facing player relocation who has just been traded and who must report to a new team in two days.  Best case scenario you have a couple weeks to complete the relocation. Let’s take a look at a very realistic scenario. You get a call.  You must relocate to another city.  Your relocation ch [...]

NFL Transactions Are Endless

21 August, 2017

NFL transactions are happening constantly as the rest of us go about our daily lives.  Just this past weekend, in the span of 48 hours, twenty-one players experienced the harsh reality of life in the NFL and their lives were greatly affected. Nine teams, twenty-one transactions, in 48 hours . . . one weekend . . . with two more weeks to go before each teams must whittle their rosters from 90 players to fifty-three.  If that same pace of transactions happens over the next fourteen days, we w [...]

Top College Quarterbacks To Watch in 2017

15 August, 2017

Top College Quarterbacks to watch in 2017 are many.  This may well be the best year for quarterbacks in college in quite a long time, and you better believe the pros are paying close attention.  Let’s face it, in the NFL, there really are only five or six elite quarterbacks.  After that the fall to the second tier is a long one, so there are probably twenty-five teams very interested in the 2017 crop of college quarterbacks. Let’s take a look at, arguably, the Top Five in the Class of [...]

Understanding Player Relocation Hardships

08 August, 2017

Understanding player relocation hardships only requires a look at Edwin Jackson, current starting pitcher for the Washington Nationals.  Jackson holds the record among active MLB players for being traded twelve times during his fourteen year MLB career.  Let’s take a quick look at this much-traveled player: 2001 drafted by Los Angeles Dodgers 2003 makes his MLB debut with Dodgers 2006 traded to Tampa Bay 2008 traded to Detroit 2009 traded to Arizona 2010 traded to the Whi [...]

NFL Rule Change On Roster Cuts

01 August, 2017

The NFL rule change regarding roster cuts, passed by league owners back in January 2017, will be in effect this year during Training Camps, which just began around the NFL. This new rule states that when teams trim their rosters from 90 players to 53, all roster cuts will occur on the same day. In the past, roster cuts were conducted in two phases, one dropping the roster from 90 to 75, and the second cutting the rosters from 75 to the final 53. The preseason ends on September 1, 2017. [...]

Player Relocation Means Hectic and Confusing Upheaval

25 July, 2017

Player relocation, as in the case of recently-traded David Phelps, can be, and usually is, a whirlwind of confusion. Phelps, a reliever for the Florida Marlins, was recently traded to the Seattle Mariners, who were looking for bullpen help.  Here’s how it all went down. As the trade deadline of July 31st approached, the trade rumors heated up.  Rumors were circulating that Phelps was going to be traded, and the team supposedly interested was the Seattle Mariners.  One of Phelps closes [...]

Minor League Baseball Realities

18 July, 2017

Minor League Baseball realities are far-removed from the Major League realities.  We recently wrote an article about the MLB Draft 2017: What Happens After the Draft, in which we detailed the signings of draftees and how they are then shipped off to various levels in the minor league systems. But what happens then? What is life like for a minor league baseball player? One thing we can say, with total certainty, is that it is not glamorous. Minor League baseball players, for instance, r [...]

2017 MLB Trade Deadline is Confusing This Year

11 July, 2017

2017 MLB Trade Deadline is rapidly approaching, and this may well be the most confusing year yet. Why? Because of the two wildcard berths available for the playoffs, and because of the league balance, especially in the American League, very few teams are “out of it” as July comes to a close.  In fact, in the American League, the team with the worst record is still only 7 ½ games out of a playoff berth.  In the National League there are five teams which could be considered out of it, [...]

MLB Draft 2017: What Happens After Signings

05 July, 2017

MLB Draft 2017 is now three weeks in the past. The smoke has cleared, the selections have been made, all eyes are again on the pennant races, but what happens to those who were drafted? We all hear about the selections, but does anyone really know what happens after those selections are made? What happens is the process of assigning signing bonuses based on each team’s limit, called a bonus pool, and the slot recommendations for each round of signings.  In other words, a second round draft [...]
